Connecting/Disconnecting Telnet Clients

Follow these general instructions to connect a Telnet client to mvBase; however, these procedures may differ among end-user devices, depending on the particular Telnet client being used.

  1. Start the mvBase Workstation on the system configured using the Workstation tab of the Administration Utility. See mvTelnet Configuration for specific steps in this process.

  2. Ensure that the mvBase Server is running on the system entered as Server Name in the Telnet Servers configuration dialog box.

  3. Using a Telnet client, request a Telnet connection. Type this command at the DOS command prompt:

  4. Telnet server, port#

    Parameter(s)

    server

System name where mvTelnet is running. If no domain name server is available, type in the IP address.

    port #

    TCP port number.

When asked for a HOST or SYSTEM name and TCP port number, enter the name of the system on which you have started the mvTelnet Server and the TCP port specified in the mvTelnet Server configuration.

The HOST or SYSTEM name is not necessarily the same as the mvBase Server name you entered in the mvTelnet Server configuration.

If the intended port for a connection is 23, it is not necessary to designate the port # at TCL, as this is the standard TCP port.

  5. Proceed with connection procedures for your specific Telnet client.

  6. At this point, you receive a Welcome banner on your Telnet client.

  7. Upon receiving disconnect notification from either the Telnet client or the mvBase Server, the other side is notified as appropriate and the mvTelnet client is disconnected. When the Telnet client disconnects, it drops the connection to the mvTelnet Server and it also drops the line session between the mvTelnet Server and the mvBase Server.

If the DISCONNECT command is executed at TCL on the mvBase Server, the line to the Telnet client is dropped, and the client announces that the connection is dropped. The Telnet client, however, is not terminated.

For Systech RCS/4000 and Digi Port Server I systems, mvTelnet now detects when a remote Telnet client connection has been lost, and clears the line once the associated Telnet client is disconnected. (The disconnect time is a result of the value in the KeepAlive field in the new Options tab in the Administration Utility.) The line is then available for reconnection. (This feature is only available for systems running Windows.)
