Starting the D3 Virtual Machine

Before starting the D3 virtual machine, you must complete the D3 installation instructions in Installing D3. The instructions in these topics must be completed:

To start the D3 virtual machine, execute these instructions:

  1. Set the UNIX environment to multiuser. Enter:

  2. init 5

  3. Start the D3 virtual machine. Enter:

  4. d3 -0 -l

    where the last option (-l) is a lowercase L, not the number 1 (one). A similar screen displays:

  5. Type A for ABS only.

  6. NOTE

    The upgrade process modifies the pick0 configuration file as necessary to include all tape devices identified during the upgrade process. These new device entries may not be necessary and can be removed by the system administrator when the upgrade is complete. Do not remove the new ABS and datafiles pseudo-floppy entries. If any old ABS or data files tape devices exist, remove them.

Loading the ABS

The list of tape devices in the configuration file displays. The tape device numbers may vary, depending on the particular system configuration.

Restore ABS to disk /dev/rpick from:

pseudo/usr/lib/pick/ab:                         0

pseudo/usr/lib/pick/dt:                         1

SCT/dev/rmt0.1:                                 2

SCT low density/dev/rmt0.5:                     3

Tape number (q = quit): 0_

To load the ABS:

  1. Enter the number that corresponds to the /usr/lib/pick/ab device.

  2. In this example, 0 is entered.

    The following prompt displays:

    Mount ABS volume #1 and type 'c' to continue (q=quit) _

  3. Type c.

  4. The ABS frame numbers display while the load is in progress. When the ABS load is complete, the following prompt displays:

    nnnn ABS frames loaded.

    Options: F)ile only, A)BS only, X) eXecute. Q)uit = _
