Operating the mvBase Workstation

The mvBase Workstation is a provider and manager for three types of mvBase clients:

NOTE

  • mvTelnet is not a Telnet client but a Telnet client manager. Telnet clients must connect to mvBase via the mvBase Workstation (the mvTelnet Server).

  • The only standard mvBase client that is not managed by the mvBase Workstation is the mvBase Terminal Emulator, mvTerm.

Configure these above client types via the Workstation tab of the Administration Utility. Once you define one or more such clients for use with mvBase, you start the Workstation, connect that Workstation to the mvBase Server, and clients then connect to the Server via the Workstation (or in the case of Windows printers or serial printers connected to COM ports, they become accessible within the MultiValue environment).

NOTE

If you do not need to connect any of the above client types to the mvBase Server, then you do not need to configure or start the mvBase Workstation.

This section describes the procedures related to operating (starting, connecting and stopping) the mvBase Workstation via the Workstation tab of the Administration Utility. This section does not address the configuration of clients that are managed by the mvBase Workstation.

Section Overview

This section contains the following Workstation-related topics.

Workstation Guidelines

Summarizes general operational guidelines applicable to the mvBase Workstation.

Starting the mvBase Workstation

Describes the procedure for starting the mvBase Workstation as an application or service once you have defined at least one associated client.

Connecting the mvBase Workstation

Describes the procedure for connecting an mvBase Workstation to the Server once both have been started.

Stopping the mvBase Workstation

Describes the procedure for stopping an mvBase Workstation.

Operating Remote Workstations

Describes considerations and steps required in order to configure and connect remote Workstations to the mvBase Server.

Coordinating Client Line Consumption

Summarizes several guidelines and a few strategies that may help you prevent conflict in the line consumption of multiple client types. This topic addresses the line consumption of all clients managed by the Workstation in addition to client line consumption of the mvTerm client.

Configuring Dynamic Workstations

Instructions for creating, modifying, and deleting dynamic workstation configurations.
