mvBase allows you to configure COM ports so that connecting devices may be run as mvBase clients. Clients which connect in this fashion connect to traditional MultiValue Server lines. Such clients include terminal devices and traditional MultiValue serial printers.
You configure COM ports for use with mvBase via the Ports tab, accessed via the Workstation tab of the Administration Utility. Configurable COM port features include:
The mvBase Server to which to connect.
Startup connection options.
The Disconnect Character.
Multiple communications settings.
The line or line pool through which COM port clients connect.
Multiple Windows interoperability functions.
A disable feature that retains COM port settings even when not in use.
Overview of COM Port Connections
You have three options to establish connections between COM ports and mvBase Server lines:
Default (or on-startup) method: automatically starts each connection when the Workstation starts, immediately consuming one license per lifetime allocation of a connection. Simply start the Workstation to connect to the Server with this method.
On-demand method: permits license sharing by preventing the automatic, lifetime allocation of a license to a connection.
Serial printer method: configures the COM port for use as a serial printer connection. The printer functions automatically as a raw printer client. This method does not consume an mvBase license.
