What to do Before Calling Your System Supplier

When an error of any kind occurs, first try to correct it following the instructions given in this manual or in one of the other mvBase reference manuals. If you are unable to correct the error condition, call your system supplier for support. But before calling, do the following:

  1. Check the MultiValue system by running VERIFY-SYSTEM from the SYSPROG account. Write down the numbers of all frames listed on the screen that do not verify.

  2. If the problem is occurring on a particular line or process, note down the number. Also, write down any error messages displayed on the terminal connected to that line or process.

  3. Check the operating lights on the hardware and write down which lights are on, which ones are off, and which (if any) are flashing.

  4. Check the system console and write down any error messages displayed there.

  5. Check the SYSTEM-ERRORS file (see Logging of System Errors). Write down any newly logged errors.

  6. Write down the release number of the operating system you are running. Type the WHICH command at the TCL prompt from the SYSPROG account.

  7. Write down all software patches that are present on your system.

Collecting this information before calling your system supplier saves considerable time, since technical support personnel will ask you to supply as many details as you can about the particular problem you are having.
