A Windows system may connect to any other Windows system in the network from the Workstation tab of the Administration Utility dialog box. When started, the remote Workstation performs mvBase Administration Utility functions on the remote system. The Workstation tab on the mvBase Server system identifies the most recently connected remote system for which administration functions have been performed.
Considerations
Observe these parameters and considerations when configuring and connecting a remote Workstation:
mvBase must be installed on the remote system.
Sufficient licenses must be available for configuration of remote Workstations.
Customary parameters that apply to local Workstations are also relevant; for example, at least one Workstation client must be configured on the remote Workstation.
The mvBase Workstation component may be run on remote Windows systems.
The remote Workstation must be executed as a service. Windows does not support remote Workstations when they are executed as an application. Also note that when the Workstation runs as a service, it is highly advisable to run the Server as a service as well.
The mvBase client and mvBase Workstation components should be located (ideally) only on the mvBase Server system directory. When installing mvBase on the remote system, designate the Server system in the directory path on which mvBase is installed. This assumes prior configuration of the network so that the Server and Workstation systems are visible and adequately shared on the network.
Administration rights are required according to the execution mode of the remote Workstation:
When the Workstation is executing as a service, administrator rights are required for all operations (starting, stopping, installing, removing and configuring the Workstation).
When the Workstation is executing as an application, administrator rights are required to configure the Workstation.
The Server system can perform administration of COM ports and printers on one or more remote Workstation (client) system(s). Each remote Workstation must first be configured and connected.
Connecting Remote Workstations
Perform this procedure in order to connect a remote Workstation to the Server. Note that this procedure requires physical access to both the Server and the remote Workstation.
On the Server, set up the \mvBase\wstation directory as a shared directory.
On the Server, launch or switch to the Administration Utility.
On the Server, select the Workstation tab.
On the Server, type the name of the remote Workstation (client) system to which the Server is to connect.
On the Server, select Connect. A message confirms a successful connection and the Connect button now displays Disconnect.
If the remote (client) system does not already have the mvBase Workstation installed on it, a dialog box appears and remote administration may not be performed.
NOTE |
Sharing a directory on a Windows system may require additional access, rights and permissions parameters to be defined for each remote Workstation system which is to connect to the Server system. See your Windows documentation if required. |
On each remote Workstation, set up a connection to the shared directory \mvbase\wstation on the Server. This is the directory shared in Step 5 above.
On each remote Workstation, set up shortcuts that point across the network to enable the Workstation to connect to the Server using the mvTerm client:
In the mvBase folder on the remote Workstation, create a shortcut to the programs below. These are located in the \mvbase\wstation directory on the mvBase Server. This is the directory shared in Step 5 above.
MVTERM.EXE
MVADMIN.EXE
MVWORKAP.EXE
MVWORKSC.EXE
On the remote Workstation, select the mvTerm icon to start the mvTerm client.
Viewing Workstation Connections
When starting the mvBase Workstation as an application, the application window (visible when maximized) displays the current connections being made from that Workstation to various mvBase Servers. This window is scrollable, and the information can be sorted by the contents of any column by clicking on the column header.
