Monitoring Errors

Windows logs both user and system errors in two files, the SECURITY-LOG file and the SYSTEM-ERRORS file. The severity of errors logged varies considerably. For example, simple errors such as incorrectly typing a command, as well as serious system errors, are logged.

The LIST-SECURITY-LOG command lists all security violations logged in the SECURITY-LOG file. There are five commands for listing the contents of the SYSTEM-ERRORS file. The LIST-DISK-ERRS command lists all logged disk drive errors; the LIST-SOFTRAPS command lists all logged native softrap aborts; the LIST-GFE-LOG command lists all logged GFEs (Group Format Errors); the LIST-ABORTS command lists all virtual software aborts logged in the SYSTEM-ERRORS file.

The SECURITY-LOG file is discussed in "System Security" of this guide. GFEs, native softrap aborts, and the SYSTEM-ERRORS file are discussed in Error Recovery and Troubleshooting.
