FILE-SAVE Proc

The FILE-SAVE Proc saves the entire data area of the disk to backup medium.

Format

FILE-SAVE

NOTE

FILE-SAVE incorporates the SAVE command with the S, T, and Y options.

Description

FILE-SAVE makes formatted copies of all files, which are stored one after another on the backup medium. This allows you to restore any account, file, or item selectively.

The FILE-SAVE Proc saves all groups regardless of the state of the group update flags. As each group is saved, the group update flag is cleared. The purpose of clearing the group update flags is to allow for beginning a new incremental cycle (see the INCR-SAVE Proc).

A list of the base frame IDs of these updated groups is stored in a table, which enables you to recover the flags in case the filesave aborts while in progress.

NOTE

To produce a backward compatible tape, use the SAVE command with the C option.

Using FILE-SAVE

When you enter FILE-SAVE, the tape drive or floppy disk drive is attached to your process.

Messages similar to these display:

BLOCK SIZE: 16896

BLOCK SIZE: 16896

[6004] TAPE ON LINE

BLOCK SIZE: 16896

FILE SAVE BEGINNING AT 11:55:49  dd mmm yyyy

This prompt appears:

CONSOLE LISTING TO PRINTER?

  1. Type Y to send a listing of all saved files to the printer instead of to the screen. If you type N, the listing displays on the screen.

  2. This prompt appears:

  3. DO YOU WANT FILE STATISTICS REPORT?

File statistics on all saved files are stored in the STAT-FILE file, and a copy of them is written to backup medium when the filesave is complete. Type Y if you want to send a copy of the File Statistics Report to the printer. Type N if you do not.

  4. This prompt appears:

  5. DO YOU WANT TO DO A FILE-SAVE VERIFICATION?

Type Y to verify that all accounts and files have been saved on backup medium and can be read without errors. The SEL-RESTORE command may be used to restore files from the filesave backup medium.

FILE-SAVE checks the tape drive or floppy disk drive and its media by writing 20 test records to tape or floppy disk and then reading them back in. You should see these messages:

FILE SAVE DEVICE AND MEDIA CHECK

    WRITE 20 RECORDS AND EOF

The test can take several minutes to complete. When the data is verified, these messages appear:

    REWIND AND READ 20 RECORDS

    NO ERRORS

  6. If the data cannot be verified, either the tape drive or floppy disk drive is not working properly or there is something wrong with the media. Load another backup medium in the drive and try again. If this doesn’t work either, call your system supplier.

  7. If the test is successful, the filesave begins. Each account is listed on the screen as it is saved (unless you sent the console listing to the printer), and then these messages appear:

    *    1SYSTEM

    1    2 SYSTEM > SYSPROG

    1   45 SYSTEM > ACC

    1   48 SYSTEM > SA

    317 ITEMS DUMPED.

    [6007] 1/4 INCH CARTRIDGE UNIT

    BLOCK SIZE: 16896

  8. If the end of the backup medium is reached before the filesave is done, you are prompted either to continue copying to another backup medium or to quit. If you type C to continue, the backup medium rewinds. Load the next backup medium in the drive and type C again.

  9. When the filesave is complete, a message such as this displays:

FILE SAVE FINISHED AT 12:17:29  dd mmm yyyy

  10. If you requested a copy of the File Statistics Report, the report is sent to the printer, and a message such as this displays:

  11. GENERATE FILE STATISTICS REPORT

    ENTRY # 1

  12. If you requested a filesave verification, you are prompted to mount the first backup medium of the file save. When this is done, press ENTER. A list of all accounts and files present on the backup medium displays on your screen:

  13. * FILE-SAVE VERIFICATION *

MOUNT REEL #1 THEN PRESS <ENTER>><ENTER>

  14. If you used more than one backup medium, you are prompted to load the first backup medium before the verification proceeds. When the filesave is finished, the Proc logs the account off the system, and the backup medium is rewound.
