INCR-SAVE Proc

The INCR-SAVE Proc performs an incremental filesave.

Format

Description

An incremental filesave copies to backup medium all changes in the data area of the disk that have been made since the last full data backup; it must be made in conjunction with a full filesave (see the FILE-SAVE commands).

INCR-SAVE incorporates the SAVE command with the T and U options. It saves all files and items that have been either added, updated, or deleted. This Proc does not clear group update flags.

Incremental filesaves are cumulative; that is, they save all portions of the data area that have been updated since the last full backup, no matter how many incremental backups have been done since then.

Using INCR-SAVE

When you enter INCR-SAVE, the backup medium is attached to your process (if it is not already attached).

Messages similar to these display:

1. You are prompted to specify this information:

CONSOLE LISTING TO PRINTER?

Type Y to send the list of account names and file names to the printer instead of to the screen as they are saved. Type N to display them on the screen.

2. This prompt displays:

DO YOU WANT FILE STATISTICS REPORT?

File statistics on all saved files are stored in the STAT-FILE file, and a copy of them is written to backup medium when the filesave is complete. Type Y if you want to send a copy of the File Statistics Report to the printer. Type N if you do not.

3. This prompt appears:

DO YOU WANT TO DO A FILE-SAVE VERIFICATION?

Type Y to verify that all accounts and files have been saved on backup medium and can be read without errors. The SEL-RESTORE command may be used to restore files from the filesave backup medium.

4. INCR-SAVE checks the backup medium by writing 20 test records to it and then reading them back in. You should see these messages:

FILE SAVE DEVICE AND MEDIA CHECK WRITE 20 RECORDS AND EOF

The test can take several minutes to complete. When the data is verified, these messages appear:

REWIND AND READ 20 RECORDS NO ERRORS

5. If the data cannot be verified, either the backup medium is not working properly or there is something wrong with the media. Load another tape or floppy disk in the drive and try again. If this doesn't work either, call your system supplier.

6. If the test is successful, the filesave begins. The name of each account is listed on the screen as it is scanned for changes; each group with changes is saved. Then these messages display:

7. If the end of the backup medium is reached before the filesave is done, you are prompted either to continue copying to another backup medium or to quit. If you type C to continue, the tape rewinds. Load the next tape or floppy disk in the drive and type C again.

8. When the filesave is complete, a message such as this displays:

INCREMENTAL FILE SAVE FINISHED AT 15:25:42  dd mmm yyyy

9. If you requested a copy of the File Statistics Report, the report is sent to the printer, and a message such as this displays:

GENERATE FILE STATISTICS REPORT   ENTRY # 8

10. If you requested a filesave verification, you are prompted to mount the first backup medium of the filesave. When this is done, press ENTER. A list of all accounts and files present on the backup medium displays on your screen:

11. If you used more than one backup medium, you are prompted to load the first one before the verification proceeds. When the incremental filesave is finished, the Proc logs the account off the system, and the backup medium is rewound.
