Serial Terminals

Asynchronous ASCII terminals connect directly to the VME and either built-in ports (COM1, COM2) or extension ports (COM1 to COM255 on Windows) are used.

The ports start automatically when VME is initialized by configuring the ports using the D3 Connect tab of the D3 Device Manager (see the Administrators Guide) or by using the dev-make TCL command (see the D3 Reference Manual).

The port number is associated to the PIB number that is using it.

Ports cannot be used by any other Windows application, even if they are not logged on.

When VME initializes, select <return> to display the logon banner.

NOTE

  • The dev-remov, exit, and disconnect TCL commands (see the D3 Reference Manual) free the terminal so it can be used by another Windows application. Use the dev-make command to reinitialize it.

  • VME does not use the Windows TAPI interface to access the device. Therefore, it is not aware that a non-active application has reserved the device through TAPI.
