D3 installation types

Before proceeding, decide which D3 installation is appropriate and complete the worksheets.

The three types of D3 installations are detailed in the following sections:

Installation Type Description
Installing D3 This section steps through installation instructions for a first time D3 installation.
Upgrading with a file-save tape This section details upgrading from a previous D3 release and/or upgrading to D3 for those migrating from another D3 platform, Advanced Pick, R83, or other Pick-compatible environments using a file-save tape.

A new Monitor, ABS, and data files are installed. Data is restored from the file-save tape by restoring accounts, then selectively restoring required items into the system files.

Upgrading with data files in place This section details upgrading from a previous D3 release without performing a full file restore.

The upgrade updates the Monitor, ABS, and data files of the dm, sql, and sqldemo accounts as well as the master dictionaries of all other accounts.

If you are migrating from a system with a frame size other than 4k, you must perform a file-save before installing D3. This is because you need to do a full restore and cannot upgrade with data files in place.

If you are upgrading from a version of D3 with a frame size other than 4k, you must do a full restore and cannot upgrade with data files in place.

Warning: Beginning with release 7.4, the frame size changed from 2 KB to 4 KB. You must perform a file-save before installing D3 because you need to do a full restore and cannot upgrade with data files in place if you are upgrading from a system prior to release 7.4.

For example, if you are upgrading from a system with a 2 KB frame size, such as D3 7.3.x, to D3 7.4 or later, you would enter: restore-accounts (f2000.

For 7.5 or prior, and due to a change in pointer item structure, a full restore is required to upgrade to this release. For additional information, see Migration tips .
