Administering BlueZone |
Chapter 6 |
The Distribution Image Directory used for diskette images can also be used to distribute BlueZone over a network connection. If the end user can map a network drive to their system or browse the Network Neighborhood to the directory, SETUP.EXE can install BlueZone to the end user’s computer across the network.
NOTE If installing BlueZone over dial-up or WAN connections, consider using compressed distribution files or BlueZone Web-to-Host to ensure the integrity of the files during the transfer.
CAUTION!
Do not
use the Network Installation setup
feature to distribute BlueZone from a network server. The
Network Installation does not
install any files on the end user’s system, but loads the files over the
network when BlueZone is launched.
SEE Creating a Shared Network Installation section of this chapter for more information.
Distribute (perhaps via email) the server name, drive, and Distribution Image Directory name to users.
Have users Browse to the Distribution Image Directory and run SETUP.EXE.
The user can enter Setup information during the course of the installation, or it can be pre-configured with SETUP.INI.
The BlueZone Setup program installs BlueZone on the End User’s system in a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on the speed of the network.
An excellent method for distributing BlueZone is to compress all of the files in the Distribution Image Directory into a single self-extracting, executable file using an archiving program such as ZIP2EXE in the PKZIP family of products, or WINZIP Self Extractor. These archiving programs also protect the files from becoming corrupted during the transfer.
Use compressed files to distribute BlueZone from File Servers, FTP Servers, Email, and any other method where the files must be transferred to the user prior to installation. Once the user downloads the file to the desktop, simply running the executable unzips the files allowing access to BlueZone’s SETUP.EXE
