Letter from Susie

The past month has been another busy one. Highlights included a meeting with the analyst firm Gartner. Andy Youniss, Rocket President and CEO, and I gave a presentation on our U2 business, and I have a follow-up call scheduled at the end of this month. We've set the location and dates for the next U2 University in the US. This technical training event will be held in downtown Denver May 8-10, 2012. With the US venue and dates set, our next task will be to schedule the UK and Australian events. Based on your feedback, we will include more content (sessions, demos, training, etc.) on other Rocket products in our 2012 U2 University agenda. If you have suggestions for topics and technology you want covered, please send them to u2askus@rs.com.

We held our mid-year Sales meeting, attended by all the WW U2 Sales reps and Sales Engineers. The territory reviews indicated that 2011 will be another strong year for the U2 business. We had a team outing to a cooking school that was a fun team-building event, and resulted in a delicious dinner. Below is a picture of Ron Bleakney, VP Rocket WW Sales and John Mathieu, VP WW U2 Sales in their aprons, mixer at the ready.

The following feedback was recently posted to the U2UG forum by the end user of a Rocket U2 partner.

History: About 18 months ago we migrated user accounts from a locally hosted AD domain to a remote corporate AD domain and during this time period most users would experience a significant logon delay because logon credentials were being accessed only at the single PDC EMULATOR over a wide area network 2500 miles away. Logon times were delayed in most cases about 90 seconds and only the first 50 users cached would have faster subsequent logons.

Current Status: We upgraded from 10.2.10 to 11.1.1 this past weekend and feedback from our users has been overwhelmingly positive about how fast they can log in now - in just a few seconds!

I thought I would make everyone aware of this significant improvement (for AD WAN installations) and acknowledge Rocket Software for fixing this long-standing issue! It certainly pays to read the release notes when announced from Rocket.

The release notes for 11.1.1 documented the following improvement:

UNV-3858 UniVerse -- At UniVerse 11.1.1, an upgrade was made to make Directory Services calls to retrieve the login path information. These calls are directed to any (or the closest, if the network is properly configured) Active Directory server that contains Domain Controller Information about login paths. Also, username/sid/uid cache is now used for all types of users.

What improves:

  1. Login speed
For first user access after UV shutdown/restart: due to the ability to reach a closer situated AD server for the information (fast)

For subsequent user access: due to the use of username/sid/uid cache (fastest)

  2. Reliability
Due to the ability to retrieve user authentication either from cache or any AD server even if the server containing PDC role is down or inaccessible - which is the main problem with slow or unreliable networks.
