Securing the mvBase Server System

Securing virtual memory storage files means limiting access to the drive or directory on each system on which they are located (ideally, only the mvBase administrator should be allowed to access these files from the mvBase Server system). Securing the mvBase Server builds on this level of security by allowing connection between the Server and these remote files on one side, and limiting a more general user access to the Server on the other side.

The mvBase Server system must be properly installed on the network, and any drive on the system which other users require must be shared. It is possible to share selectively the pertinent drive(s) on the mvBase Server system. This allows only authorized users to access mvBase, and it protects the Server system’s program and data files.

When configuring the security for an mvBase Server system, you must allow any authorized client User-Name(s) to connect to that system (possibly with a password) as an mvBase client. These steps are identical to those used for securing remote virtual memory storage files, but they are now performed on the mvBase Server.

  1. Navigate to the Server system via Windows Explorer.

  2. Determine if you want to restrict access to the drive, the directory, or the file alone, and display the appropriate level within Windows Explorer.

  3. Select the drive, directory or file with the right mouse button, and select Properties (or highlight the object, and select File, then Properties from the pull-down menu).

  4. Proceed to define Sharing, Permissions, or Security, depending on which option(s) your version of Windows allow(s). This will mean defining either the Access Type according to User-Name or Password, or both.

If your version of Windows does not allow specific password protection, you may still define Permissions according to User-Name.

  5. Finally, you may wish to use a password-protected screen saver in order to protect a system which must remain running in your absence.

  6. NOTE

Screen savers have been known to consume large amounts of system resources on Windows systems. Implement screen savers carefully on such systems, and monitor system activity closely after implementing a screen saver for the first time.

    1. Select Start from the Windows Desktop.

    2. Select Settings.

    3. Select Control Panel.

    4. Select Display.

    5. Select the Screen Saver tab.

    6. Choose a screen saver type, and the Password Protected option activates.

    7. Select the Password Protected option, define the password, and define the activation time.

    8. Select OK.
