Making the Use of Quotes Optional

The use of single or double quotes is optional for a user or an account. A Q in Attribute 9 in a User Definition item or Account Definition item in the SYSTEM Dictionary makes the use of quotes optional.

If quotes are optional, INFO/ACCESS assumes that all words not enclosed in quotes are literal values unless the words are:

  1. Valid attribute names for the file being accessed, defined in the file dictionary or the Master Dictionary.

  2. Connectives, modifiers, or relational operators defined in the Master Dictionary.

  3. Phrases defined in the file dictionary or the Master Dictionary.

The user might still choose to use quotes in situations where a parameter is ambiguous.
