mvBase supports the following types of peripheral (and virtual) devices:
Logical tape units (LTUs). LTUs provide a simple numbering scheme that references a wide variety of physical and virtual tape devices in a uniform and consistent manner. These are defined and configured in the Tapes tab, accessed via the Server tab of the Administration Utility. LTUs include:
Physical tape devices, including:
1/4-inch tape
1/2-inch tape
4mm tape
8mm tape
Virtual tape files (VTFs): files that function as tape devices. A virtual tape file is used in the same manner a tape device is used.
Virtual tape links (VTLs): communication links between two mvBase Servers that act as read-only or write-only tape devices. A pair of VTLs can be used together to provide a read/write tape device on another system.
Physical floppy disk drives, which can be treated in one of two ways:
As (small) reels of tape, in which raw disk is divided into a series of tape blocks
As normal, file-structured drives, with Windows-compatible directories, sub-directories and files. Multiple virtual tape files can be written to a floppy disk drive in this format.
NOTE |
LTUs assigned to mvBase are referred to as mvBase Tapes during installation (upgrade) and subsequent configuration in the Server tab of the Administration Utility. |
Printers, which are managed as clients by the appropriate dialog box or tab of the Administration Utility (Workstation tab). Printers may be mapped as:
COM port clients - serial printers (see the Ports tab)
Windows printer clients - printers previously defined in the Windows Printers utility (see the Printers tab)
Printers attached to remote terminal servers and connected via the Telnet protocol to mvTelnet Servers (see the Telnet Servers tab)
