How to Create Desktop Shortcut Icons that Launch Specific Configuration Files

The Shortcuts feature can be used in several ways.  The purpose of this procedure is to explain how to deliver desktop shortcuts that launch specific BlueZone configurations, when used in conjunction with the Served Desktop Deployment Mode.

When to Use the Feature

This feature is often used when the BlueZone Administrator is replacing a competitor's desktop emulation program with BlueZone Served Desktop, and it is the goal of the BlueZone Administrator to replicate the competitor's desktop environment as closely as possible.

For example, use this feature if your End Users are accustomed to having two (or more) desktop shortcuts that launch specific Mainframe sessions.

Configuration Method: Web-to-Host Wizard

Feature Scope: Launch Folder Level Feature

Procedure

  1. Launch the Web-to-Host Wizard.

  2. Navigate to the desired Site and Launch Folder.

  3. Using the Wizard, create or launch a BlueZone emulation client Session and create the required number of BlueZone configuration files by using the Save As feature.

  4. On the Advanced Settings page, click the Add Files button, add these configuration files to the Served Desktop Launch Folder.

  5. On the Advanced Settings page and click the Shortcuts button.

  6. Create a label for the shortcut by placing a name in the editbox provided.

  7. Create the shortcut along with the file name that you want to use to launch the session.  This is done by placing the name of the shortcut along with the /F command line switch in the editbox provided.

Create one of these entires for each shortcut that you want to deliver to your End Users.

The following screen shot shows two shortcuts along with their respective labels:

Since the editbox is not long enough to display the entire shortcut, here are the shortcuts in their entirety:

C:\Program Files\SEAGULL\BlueZone\bzmd.exe /Fmainframe1.zmd

 

and

 

C:\Program Files\SEAGULL\BlueZone\bzmd.exe /Fmainframe2.zmd

 

Pay particular attention to the use of the /F Command Line Switch located at the end of the shortcut.  One shortcut will launch a BlueZone Mainframe Display session using the configuration file named mainframe1.zmd, and the other will launch a BlueZone Mainframe Display session using the configuration file named mainframe2.zmd.

CAUTION!  Normally quotation marks are not required when entering the shortcut into the Wizard.  However, if your configuration file name contains spaces, you must surround the configuration file name with double quotation makes as shown here:

C:\Program Files\SEAGULL\BlueZone\bzmd.exe /F"mainframe 1.zmd"

 

  1. Once you have the required shortcut information entered, click the OK button.

  2. Use the Test Launch Folders feature to make sure the desktop shortcuts work correctly.
